“Every fragment of self-talk is a little story in the head that goes around, and then you look at reality through the lens of the little story.” -- Eckhart Tolle
As we move through our lives, we have a constant dialogue in our heads, commenting and judging.
"I look terrible."
"Oh no, I just messed up and I look stupid."
"I'll never be able to do this."
Many of us believe that what goes through our heads is the truth, when really it is just one perspective out of infinite possibilities.
Part of coaching is helping people to be aware of the lens through which they view their lives, and to evaluate whether it is helpful or harmful. What we believe absolutely shapes our reality, so why not shape our beliefs to support our success? At Ananda, we use affirmations to help our clients change their mental landscapes and empower themselves.
"I look terrible" becomes "I'm beautiful just as I am."
"I messed up and I look stupid" becomes "Oops, mistakes happen; now I know how to do better next time."
"I'll never be able to do this" becomes "I can do this!"
When you find yourself engaging in negative self-talk, stop and turn it around. Make a statement to yourself in the affirmative. Believing in yourself, and in possibility, is the first step toward creating the reality that you desire.
